S03 Ep 01: Family Of Slaves (Main Story)
Timeline: Mission 1 S3 Day 17
Early the next day as the day shift returned to duty, by this time none of the crew had gotten little sleep, but now the day shift took their posts as the ship entered the Thorion system at Full Impulse, after their little encounter at the edge of the Thorion system, they were finally ready to move deeper into the system. The fighters were on rotation one Squadron was on CAP duty while the other two were resting, currently, Lieutenant Martinson was with her fighters so there was a replacement helm officer at the station so the Captain looked over to her First Officer.
“Commander Sterling, has your sensors detect any of our people yet?” she asked
“No Sir, but I am detecting an enemy fleet mobilizing from the fourth planet in the Thorion system. Also detecting a lot of comm chatter but it’s all encrypted. Working on an algorithm to break their code”.
“Thank you, Commander, keep me appraised, Lieutenant Winchester, be ready to send the distress call to the waiting fleet at Galen IV, send it ONLY when I say” Somers ordered
“Message ready to be sent ma’am, on your command,” replied Paul as he looked back at her. He knew that this was going to be tough as he knew the battle was just beginning. Paul also continued to keep another eye on his terminal and the information that was being gathered.
She then looked back at Parker “Lieutenant make sure all ships defence and offensive systems are ready and stay alert” she said.
“Aye Captain,” Parker replied; he wiped his sweaty palms on his uniform pants. It was an old nervous tic he had especially before a possible engagement. Standing at his post he verified once again the weapons systems were ready and on standby, the only command he waited for at the moment was red alert, the command that would allow him to go to a weapons-hot status and begin targeting.
She nodded to Cody’s response then pressed a button on her chair arm =/\= Somers to Taggert, how are the engines and power supply looking? =/\= she asked.
- Engineering -
Tapping her Commbadge =/\= Nothing we can’t handle Captain, all is in hand =/\= Nicci responded after having gotten herself cleaned up and put back together in a new uniform, Nicci put her long, blonde hair in a ponytail, and left her office. She thanked the crewman who gave her the dart and one of the dart guns and got Teela and a few other engineers together.
“Looks like those greenies left behind a few of their toys,” she said, gesturing towards the pool table in engineering where she laid them. “So, we need to find a way to prevent them from beaming out of the ship.”
“Wouldn’t we normally rotate shield frequencies so that their tags won’t work?” Teela asked. “Transport tags have one set frequency. They can’t randomly change frequencies.”
“Luckily,” she added. She remembered a friend of hers, Lt Samantha Diedrich, a former Borg, for a brief moment. The Borg were the impetus for Starfleet to research rapid shield frequency rotation; before them, shields didn’t normally rotate due to equipment not being designed for rapid rotation, computer load, shield systems wearing out more quickly, and a dozen other reasons.
“Thing is, we have quite a few repairs we need to get done, and the likelihood of our rotating frequencies fast enough is low…unless…” Nicci said to the five or so engineers she’d gathered, before starting to tap in a few commands. The idea was forming in her head, and she needed to run a quick few ideas through the computer for a moment.
“Okay, I think I have a workaround that’ll work with our limited resources. We can steal a trick from the Borg…distributed computing,” she said. She tapped a few controls to show the various bio-neural gel packs and subprocessors around the ship, running the processing through them in addition to the main computer core.
“Great idea, Lieutenant,” Machado stated. “This really could work.”
“Alright, Machado and I will get to work on making the bypass repairs necessary to reinforce the system for more support of your plan,” Pril added as she grabbed a tool kit and headed for one of the damaged sections.
Machado then followed suit and followed Pril out of engineering to go to assist in the bypassing of damaged sections of the systems Taggert pulled up on her screen to make her plan work.
- Bridge -
Doctor Cahill came to the Bridge and went straight to the medical station. She had recovered several of the blowguns from dead Orions and sent some to Medical Research, and several to the Science Lab to research ways to possibly blow the way the stuff on the darts caused crew member to be transported off the USS Tomcat.
Her early research showed it to be a compound the acted as our transporter locks do. She was now able to present her early finding to the Captain.
“Captain, I did some early research on some blow guns collected from dead Orions. I have medical research and the science working on my ideas. If it works this would stop the Orions from snatching more of our crew. The darts are some sort of transporter locks and if we can isolate the right frequency, we can block them. I was able to remove several darts to research on. This one is in a container that blocks the signals, and I was able to disable it fairly easy. I sent it to Taggert to see if engineering may be able to set up some kind of block also” she then passed the disabled one to Captain Somers along with a PADD with what they had already found out.
Looking at the Doctor with a smile “excellent Commander, implement the counter-measures immediately, I do not want to lose another crewmember to those filthy Slavers” Somers said.
Dr Cahill smiled, “I am doing it as we speak. The download of information will be done in about 2 minutes,” She goes to Communications, “Send this information to the Armada standing by to respond. Be sure to use the highest encryption available. Don’t want the Orions to intercept it…”
“I do know what I am doing,” replied Paul as he tapped a few commands onto the Console, he said “Message sent Doctor,” as he looked back at the medical officer, he finished “anything else you need me to do?”
Commander Cahill looked at the Lieutenant “I Did not mean to sound like I was telling how to do your job. Just sometimes I get excited when I discover something new.. Captain Somers has seen it before on other missions” she responded.
“Oh, and what did you find Doctor, “asked Paul as he knew that anything valuable to him might come in handy someday, although he was still rather new to intel and this being his first full mission in the role. Yes, he had made mistakes but once you learn from those you get better with it. as he looked back at Cahill.
The doctor simply nodded and continued to do what she was required to do.
Then the ship’s communications came to life.
=/\=CAP Lt. Martinson to Capt. Somers, rotating CAP flight alpha to CAP flight bravo for refuelling and rest. Any news on Serina? =/\=
Tapping her Commbadge so as she could respond =/\= nothing yet Lieutenant, bring those fighters in we are about to head in-system =/\= Somers instructed.
=/\= Understood Captain bringing birds back to nest=/\= John said switching the frequency, “=/\= Raider 2 to CAP squadron, return to the nest, Martinson out=/\= he said and turned his fighter around and landed.
“Chief…get these fighters rearmed and fueled and battle-ready”, John said to the deck chief.
Doctor Cahill smiled, “Neither do I, Captain.” She went to weapons and engineering. “The shields can be used to stop all beaming off the ship, as you can see, it is very easy to stop with a rotating frequency in the shields. This will prevent the beaming of anyone hit by the darts as long as shields are up.”
She also sent the information to Taggert in Main Engineering.
- Sickbay -
Meanwhile, Luuna was crying, wondering about sickbay. She was worried. She’d failed. What was going to happen to “This One” now? She had been left there all alone, and she couldn’t find Alpha. She was worried, whimpering softly to herself. Then hir scent caught her attention. She followed it to a smaller den (room.) There was a large flat ledge with a smaller ledge (desk and chair) inside. Prying her way past the edge of the small cave (the underside of the desk where one puts one’s legs) under the ledge (desk), “This One” found where the scent was coming from and poked her head up onto the smaller ledge (chair). Alpha had been here alright. This one pushed her way up onto the ledge (chair) and found it full of Alpha’s scent. Luna wanted to be close to Alpha in some way. Climbing up into the small ledge (chair), “This One” curled herself up as small as “This One” could and plopped down. Ahhh…
Tamara walked through Sickbay checking on things and stopped short seeing the canine snuggled into the AMO’s desk chair, she shook her head slightly and, moved closer carefully, it looked like the one that was normally with Doctor Aldana, “Heya pup, I am sorry I don’t know your name. Doctor Aldana will be back soon, okay?” Talking to an animal like it understood was still funny but Iria said it was tone and intention that translated most.
Luuna perked up. She peered over the edge of the thing Alpha called a ‘desk’ watching the new woman. She instinctively tried to scent the air attempting to determine the stranger’s identity and intent. (She would be able to at least detect levels of fear pheromones and elevated levels of adrenaline if she the woman were afraid of her, or ready to attack.) Luuna was alert, but not worried yet. She would still have to circle the desk to close the distance between them, and This One could easily escape into the cubby under the desk, or even out from the small gap at the back of the cubby if she needed to. She yawned which indicated she was calm and relaxed. Just then Luuna realized her neck itched, and she shook her head to try and reposition her collar, the tag with her name and address on it jingled.
One of the Medics made a fuss of Luuna as that Medic currently had nothing to do at the moment and the Medic knew the animal was feeling the loss of her Master.
