After the Briefing

Nicci left the briefing after talking through things with one of the other officers. It felt good to get that off her chest, and she decided to take a small 15-minute break to relax before getting back to work.
She went to her quarters and recorded a log.
"Personal log...note the stardate, computer..." she said, as the computer helpfully entered the stardate for her. "Our next mission is going to involve the Orions. I tried to keep my own experience with them personal, given that Starfleet (a) doesn't look too kindly on genetically engineered personnel serving in the fleet, even though I got an exemption due to my circumstances as did the other 21 survivors, (b) I have pheromone blockers preventing me from causing issues for the most part, and (c) I had counseling afterward that certified me fit for duty. I didn't really want to make a huge deal out of it to my new captain here."
"She's a great captain, don't get me wrong," Nicci continued. "I just don't want to get special treatment or be left out of my duty just because of what I went through. The Gorn will be rough...six-foot lizard-men still remind a lot of humans of snakes and dinosaurs, hitting on that primal fear of reptiles. Though my avian roommate my freshman year was really nice, so it's not a big deal for me. My Vulcan roommate was a bit stand-off-ish though."
Nicci got up and made some Pirellian ginger tea, which always made her feel better. She took a ship and enjoyed the warmth as it spread inside her.
She continued, "I'm just as good an officer now as before Bellringer Station, and I'm going to prove it. I can think just as logically and just as quickly as before, if not moreso. Lt. Dodd seems to have faith in me and I'll show him I can handle anything he throws my way. And if it's Orions, well, so be it."
